Up Lighting & Color

Are you having a hard time choosing what color up lighting you want to use for your reception? The trend that most brides go with is amber or a soft pink. These colors are always my go to colors. They look great in photos and on skin tones. They also blend well with just about any color scheme.

When Toni O'Reggio came into our office with her planner Latrice Cushenberry from Opulent Couturier, she knew she wanted color, but which color exactly, had yet to be determined. Her colors were Carnation Pink and Tiffany Blue. Both great options. My suggestion to her was to use LED's. The guests arrived to the Sheraton Music City to a reception painted in Tiffany Blue. As the night went on, we changed the entire room to a vibrant pink. Toni and Ugo's reception is a perfect example of how LED's can help solve the dilemma of "What color do I go with?"

Giving Thanks

Here at NEL we can't believe Thanksgiving is Thursday! This means that we made it through another crazy wedding season. For most wedding and event vendors here in Nashville, September and October have become months of pure mayheim. On August 31st, we kiss our family and friends goodbye, buckle up, and hold on for nine weeks solid. Now that we are able to catch a breath and look back at what we experienced, we'd like to say "Thanks from the bottom of our hearts" to all of our fellow vendors, planners, venues, and crew.

To our planners, you are the glue that keeps us all together. You make all of our lives easier. To our fellow vendors, thank you for the camaraderie you all provide on site and referring us to your clients. To our venues, thank you for trusting us with your clients, the early morning load ins, and late night pick ups. To our crew, you're the best in town! We all appreciate your attention to detail, your positive attitude, and work ethic. We could not have made it without you. Now, if we could only figure out a way to clone you....

We worked hard for 5 days straight for Nashville Fashion Week to create runway shows at different venues each night. So grateful to be a part of its first year ever.

Sunday - Funday! This is what happens when you try to make the crew get up at 8am to go to the lake after a night full of events.

Blake and I were thankful for casters on road cases. We thought we would try a new marketing campaign and stroll through downtown Nashville from War Memorial to the Convention Center. Why not?

We're thankful for Sarah Ashley who recently joined our team as a full time employee.

Have you heard about The Ruby? Well, its the newest venue in Nashville and we are so excited to start doing events there. Nashville based entrepreneur, Dan Cook, brought us in when construction first started on turning what used to be known as the Blakemore Primitive Baptist Church into a "gem" of a venue. Its conveniently located right across from Vanderbilt Children's Hospital and just a couple of blocks from the oh-so trendy Hillsboro Village. It's a blank canvas that allows for so many opportunities. Check out some of the construction pictures we took early on.

On November 3rd, the doors opened for The Ruby's big reveal. Here are a few photos that were shared with us by Photographer Donald Yeager from the event.

It's that time of year again. Wedding season is wrapping up and the holiday season is unfolding. With that comes corporate holiday parties, winter wonderland themed events, and New Year's celebrations. What better way to add to your decor than lighting. Here are a few ideas to put you in the spirit.

The Hutton Hotel decided to add a personal message to their Holiday Decor last year by creating a custom gobo.

Main Event Productions threw a spectacular Christmas in July party at 1418. We used color changing LED's and snowflake gobos to add some flair.

This couple decided to have a winter wonderland themed wedding.

Last but not least, count down the new year with color changing LED's.

Venue Spotlight - CJ's Off the Square

CJ's Off the Square is a historic home and garden event space that can accommodates up to 135 guests located just 2 blocks from downtown Franklin, TN. We are proud to say that CJ's was NEL's very first client. We've continued this relationship going on 6 years now and have been a part of 100's of weddings and events. This past year CJ and Amy created so many wonderful events that we thought we would share a few of those with you.

Custom Gobo Ideas

Before I go into the topic of todays blog of custom gobo ideas, I'd like to revisit a previous post we did from February. Enter Exert - One of the most frequent questions we get is "What is a Gobo and What does it stand for?". According to Wikipedia a gobo (or GOBO) derived from "Go Between" or GOes Before Optics -originally used on film sets between a light source and the set is a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of, a lighting source, used to control the shape of emitted light. In simple terms it is a "stencil" for a particular light fixture we use.

Now that we've covered the bases of a gobo, I'll get into custom gobo ideas. Not all custom gobos have to be your name in lights, but those seem to be the most requested. Here are a few creative ideas we've seen this year:

Miranda and Grant decided to have their silhouettes in lights along with their names at CJ's Off the Square in Franklin.

Monica and Patrick created a Hatch Show Print Shop poster for their custom gobo at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Megan and Joe added a little flair to their gobo by adding a stock gobo as the background.

Custom gobos are also a great way to advertise. We have a lot of corporate clients that we keep their gobo on file for all their special events like the Nashville Scene.

Yes, we even have our own on file. Had to throw this one in for kicks.

Hutton Hotel took their recognizable "H" and incorporated it into a holiday greeting.

Instead of having sparklers pointed straight at you for your big exit, why not run through your very own Power T at the end of your big day.

Maybe we don't have the perfect pattern gobo in stock and you want to have the same lace pattern that's on your dress projected onto the dance floor? Yes, that can be done as well.

A White Wedding at The Frist

On April 30th, 2011, NEL had the pleasure of working alongside with some of Nashville's best vendors to transform The Turner Courtyard at The Frist Center for Visual Arts into an all white reception for Lyndsey and Clark Rollins IV.

Terry White from The English Garden painted the picture that Helen Morisette orchestrated as the event planner. There were so many moving parts involved and the first and most important was the massive tent from Nashville Tent and Awning that spanned the entire courtyard. The tent went in on Wednesday which allowed for us to come in with Classic Party Rentals on Thursday to hang the 7 chandeliers, wash the tent ceiling in white, and for Classic to lay the black and white dance floor. See the photos below of the progress that was made between Wednesday and Thursday:

By Saturday evening, draping was hung by Events Plus; rentals were set by Classic, the aroma of Kristen Winston Catering was filling the air; every centerpiece and floral detail was perfected by Terry White; Dessert Designs had delivered their show stopping cake; the sounds of Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters set the tone; and we made sure every up light, pin spot, chandelier, and wash was powered up and focused.

A huge thanks to Divine Images for capturing every element of such a special day in Lyndsey and Clark's life.

Off Abi's Cuff - Head Tables

We all have opinions and view points in life. These are just some of mine. Believe me, I am a perfect example of a person who has champagne taste on beer budget. Sometimes when planning events we deal with what our budget allows, but if there is any wiggle room, here is some food for thought:

The tradition of a head table dates back before my time. I don't know the exact date but I know it was before 1984. Here are a couple of examples that you may still see around today.

I think its time that we take a stand and say "No more!" Its hard enough to stand on a stage with your backsides facing your closest friends and families for 20-30 minutes trying to keep your composure as you commit the rest of your life to another person who probably snores, why should you now be placed on a platform to saw into your choice of filet or cornish hen so formally as if you are holding court for the first time at Windsor Castle. Have a little fun with your head table or sweet heart table. Pop the balloons, rip down the toile, and definitely toss the Christmas lights.

Signature Events at Belle Meade Plantation

What happens when one of Nashville's most sought-out event planners is paired with one of Nashville's top wedding venues? We'll show you.

Karen Kaforey of Signature Events put together another all star cast of vendors for Katie and Travis' May 14th wedding at Belle Meade Plantation. After a picture perfect ceremony in the garden, the guests dined under Visual Element's large beaded chandelier with the newlyweds in a tent behind the Stables. We washed the tent ceiling and chandelier in a "peony" pink to match the florals from Branching Out

After dinner, catered by Chef's Market, guests were escorted through the stables to the Carriage House to enjoy cocktails, dancing, and music by Craig Duncan .

At the end of the night, the red carpet was rolled out and doors opened to one of

Matchless Limousine's classic Jaguars.

So, what all did we do inside the carriage house? We made sure the bar was highlighted with a soft light wash and battery operated LED's inside the cubes, damask gobo pattern onto the dance floor, amber up lighting around the perimeter, a custom gobo onto the door, and the icing on the cake... our crystal chandelier over the center of the dance floor. Mazel Tov, Sydney!

Recently we featured a Bar Mitzvah planned by Events by AP at Loveless Barn. This week's Mazel goes to Monica Holmes of Clean Plate Club for creating a spectacular Bat Mitzvah for Sydney Robbins at War Memorial Auditorium.

The theme: Cirque Du Sydney. Flame Throwers, Stilt Walkers, and Acrobats were flown in from Chicago; trapeze rigs were constructed in the center of the auditorium; cotton candy, popcorn, and snow cones were on display amongst balloon sculptures and illuminated sculpt ware; and our lights were set to change with every breath-taking moment of the evening. Defying Mother Nature

One of our favorite venue coordinators to work with is Mother Nature. Yes, sometimes she is temperamental, but with Plan B and even Plan C's we've had the pleasure of working on some gorgeous events.

If only to be 13 again.... I remember when an ice cream cake and sleep over sufficed for my birthday parties, but here in Nashville we know how to throw some amazing Bar and Bat Mitz Vah's. Nashville Event Lighting has had the opportunity to work on some of the BEST Bar and Bat Mitz Vah's in town, proving that we don't just do weddings.

This week we wanted to feature Taylor Asher's Bar Mitz Vah planned by Events by AP.

Check out the transformation of the Loveless Barn just by using LED's.

One of our favorite lighting elements at this event was using the color changing LED's under Music City Tents and Events Axis furniture.

The adults even had their own private lounge.

The "Yes" Mentality

In the event industry we are faced with challenges on a daily basis. These challenges can range from mother nature to not defacing the integrity of a historical landmark. When faced with a challenge, we could either tuck our tails and hide or face them head on. At Nashville Event Lighting we live by the motto "If there's a will, there's a way."

One venue that we absolutely love to work in but face challenges on, due to its massive size and limited rigging points, is Country Music Hall of Fame.

When bride June Marable walked into our office to discuss her vision for her December reception at CMHOF, we were more than willing to do our best to execute her ideas. (Insert the "Yes" mentality)

Her Vision: Italian String Lights throughout the conservatory and chinese paper lanterns incorporated, somehow..... How did we do this? 1st the bride gave us complete control over our lighting design plan with the help of her planner Meredith Zeller of Bridal Blueprints. 2nd, we incorporated our trussing to provide support and rigging points. 3rd, we created a centerpiece over the head table by hanging different shapes and sizes of chinese lanterns. We also added a special touch to her custom gobo on the rotunda wall by adding a custom red scroll from a previous event we did. UT Reception

Thinking about doing a themed reception? Check out this reception we had the pleasure of being a part of at Union Station Hotel.

Planner Karen Kafforey with Signature Events had everything planned out to a T (pun intended). The groom would have his own dedicated section in the McKinley Ballroom where it was all decked out with UT florals and goal posts provided by Ilex. This allowed the bride to have her fabulous ballroom wedding she always dreamed of. At the end of the evening the bride and groom had their chance to run through their very own Super T.

According to Wikipedia a gobo (or GOBO) derived from "Go Between" or GOes Before Optics -originally used on film sets between a light source and the set is a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of, a lighting source, used to control the shape of emitted light.

In simple terms it is a "stencil" for a particular light fixture we use. There are 2 types of gobos: stock gobos and custom gobos. We have hundreds of patterns and images to choose from in our stock gobos, and if we don't have what your looking for, we can definitely have it made.

How can you use gobos to create that "WOW" factor in your next event? Create texture and design to your dance floor, walls, ceiling, tables, furniture vignettes, ect.. Possibilities are endless. You can also use them to carry out a theme throughout your event. Example: monograms, linen or invitation patterns, and logos.

Gobo's can also be set to motion. We've set the moon to gradually move over a tent ceiling, feathers to slowly rotate on a dance floor, and snowflakes to continuously fall throughout the event.

Weddings - The Bridal Show

We were so honored when Fred Jacobs and the group at JMI gave us the opportunity to provide lighting and AV for Weddings the Bridal Show. With over 1,400 brides passing through the maze of booths, we were amazed at how successful the show became. Event Spot Light of the Week - National Corvette Museum

As we all gear up for wedding season, I'd love to look back at a few events we did over the past year and give an explanation of how we created each look.

First stop: National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, August 21st, 2010.

Challenge: Transform the event space inside a car museum into an elegant wedding reception for 500 guests.

Watt did we do?

LED up lights around the perimeter of the room. Why LED's? This particular client requested we change the color of the room from Amber, to Pale Purple, to Deep Purple at different ques during the evening. This created a very soft ambient glow for dinner that gradually changed into a more vibrant purple for music and dancing.
Pin spots on table centerpieces and cake. This effect really makes focal pieces pop. If you are going to spend a lot of money on key elements, why not highlight them and bring more attention to them.
Gobo Patterns on the dance floor. We used white Antique Rosette here. This created boundaries, interest, and decor to a not-so typical long and narrow dance floor. There are hundreds of pattern gobos to choose from and you can use any color under the rainbow.

Spot light of the week: Richland Country Club

Beth Anderson, Director of Catering & Sales at Richland, approached us and Blue Nova Design about providing a few lighting and Draping elements for their annual New Year's Eve Party. She wanted to create a 1920's masquerade themed gala in the club house ballroom topped off with a balloon drop at midnight.

Beth also added a surprise for her guest. We recreated a speakeasy in the golf cart barn. The guest would spend the first part of their evening enjoying cocktails, roulette, and black jack in the "Speakeasy". The party would then be interrupted by a masked gangster and lead the guests to their final destination, an formal masquerade to bring in 2011.

Some of the celebrity events we had the pleasure of working on were: Carrie Underwood's Play On After Party, Sarah Buxton's Wedding (writer of Keith Urban's "Stupid Boy" & "Put You in a Song"), Hank Williams Jr.'s launch party of Popcorn Sutton's Tennessee White Whisky, Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton's Engagement Party, Loretta Lynn's 50th Anniversary Party, and Tennessee Titan's Safety, Donnie Nickey's, wedding at the Parthenon.

4. LED's

In 2010, we aslo increased our inventory of LED's. The addition of the Tri Tours really has opened a lot of doors for us. We now have the power to do multiple color changes with the ease of a dimmer board. Talk about a customized wedding, you can now have the room set at a light amber for the toast, deep amber for dinner, pale pink for the first dance, and hot pink for the duration of the evening. Its a little trick that you can use to set the tone for your guest. They're also great for venues that have limited power. Here's an example from our open house where we used them to light up the food table:

3. Rock-tober

In the event industry, we like to refer to October as Rock-tober. October of 2010 was no exception for us. We consider this our busiest month for 2010. We had a total of 64 successful events. Yes, we all survived and had fun doing it!

2. We have a home!!!

In January 2010 Blake, Misty, and David moved out of the bonus room and storage sheds and into the warehouse on Armory Drive.

In May of 2010 we started the build out of our office.

In November we hosted our first ever Open House, which was a debut of our finished office space and warehouse.

1. Expanding our Staff

With the start of the New Year of 2010, David Maddux made the transition from part time to full time focusing on office operations, sales, and design. In August, Abi Reid was hired full time as office operations, sales, and design. Last but not least, Clint Pilkinton, came on board in September as Head of Production. Where does Blake fit in this mix , as President and CEO, and Misty, CFO. We still have our amazing crew that many of you have seen out and about

2010 has been a great year for Nashville Event Lighting. Just to think, in 2009 Blake, Misty, and David were working out of 3 storage sheds and Blake and Misty's bonus room. Flash Forward 12 months and lets countdown some of the milestones that have made us who we are today. This week we will showcase 10 through 6. You'll have to tune back in next week to see what made the top 5.

10. National TV

Okay so it was a small clip but we did make it onto Extreme Makeover Home Edition with our rice paper lantern donation.

9. NEL Hits the Road - We're going places people!!

In October we had the chance to work with Music City Tents & Events on a wedding in Marrowbone, KY. The Challenge: Convert an old hog barn built in the 1800's into an elegant wedding reception.

We, along with Music City Tents & Events, were also a part of an Indian wedding for 500 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY planned by Angela Proffit.

8. Holiday Decor

Not only do we do event lighting, but we can supply lighting for your holiday decor. We were so excited to be involved in some awesome Halloween and Christmas displays. For example: Richland Country Club recreated Gotham City for their annual halloween party, Big Yellow Dog Music Publishing converted their office on Music Row into a haunted house, and Hutton Hotel and Reveal Event Style brought us in to highlight the outdoor Christmas display and create a custom gobo to shine on the parking garage.

7. Truss Structures

In 2010 we were proud to present our truss. When most people think of truss, they think of industrial and modern structures used at concerts to fly lights from. Yes, they are all of the above, but if you have the right amount of creativity, you can use them to achieve so much more. For instance, this year we used them in venues to create visual elements for events. With a little bit of draping and florals, you can do just about anything. See pictures below.

6. Corporate Events

2010 was also a year filled with Corporate events. Some of these clients include Vanderbilt, Wirtgen, Lipscomb University, The Nashville Scene, Emma, and HRC Medical. Below is a picture from The Nashville Scene's Best of Party at the Parthenon in October.

Last month we hosted our first ever Nashville Event Lighting Open House. Its amazing how much lighting can transform an ordinary space into an extraordinary space . We took our office space and transformed it into a fist pumping club. We even threw in the disco ball over our "VIP Lounge" for laughs. Gray Photography Photo Shoot at our Warehouse

We were thrilled to have Zach and Jody Gray use our Lighting Warehouse for a Photography wokshop they did on lighting. We were able to light a cake and they used our space for the whole day. Even the railroad tracks and industrial park vibe came in handy...

If you have an event that might need lighting/space/AV, etc....keep us in mind, it was a blast having these guys.

As a small business owner, I can tell you from observing these classes that these people were highly engaged and getting their money's worth!

Day Three:

On Monday, we hosted our brand new IN-CAMERA: Light 2 photography workshop! This workshop was geared toward advanced off-camera lighting and shooting receptions and low light imagery. We had a blast with this packed house of 16 shooters and everything went off without a hitch. We were blessed to have the help of all those mentioned in the beginning of this post and could not have made it happen otherwise.

We had an entire reception style set-up with cakes to shoot, centerpieces, up-lighting and a bride and groom! It was really cool to finally be able to demo this side of our shooting and show others exactly how we do it!

We also demonstrated how to shoot killer portraits indoors with or without flash photography. This shot was taken with Westcott’s SpiderLite constant light with model Jason. Love it!

Then we headed outside to get crunk! It was time for some multiple strobe technique and some serious lighting control to create show-stopping images right in the camera.

Below is Kate the Awesome (our fab intern!) giving us an extra hand. Thanks to Evin Photography for the below shot :)

Our awesome dude model Jason worked it out like no one’s business!

Resulting Image: Zero dodging, zero burning, no PhotoShop and about 4 seconds of editing time in Adobe Lightroom 2 to turn the image back into a JPG for print.

Wow, last month flew by. Our best January ever, in the History of Nashville Event Lighting. 2010 looks to be incredibly promising.
